Decatur’s New Mexican Steakhouse Casa Balam Brings the Heat Atlanta Was Missing
Designed by Maria Dominguez with pendant lights and hand-painted wall details, the inviting space is breezy and bold, transporting guests to the heart of Mexico. “We wanted to show that Mexican decor doesn’t have to be skeletons and mariachi—there is more to it,” says Damian. “When you go to Mexico City or Tulum, this is what you will find.” Dreamy and serene, the spot is fit for both an elegant date night or lively dinner with loved ones.

Casa Balam opens for Mexican-inspired steaks and cocktails in downtown Decatur
Casa Balam, named for a Mayan god, debuted this week at 201 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. in the former Ted’s Montana Grill space. The eatery comes from Luis Damian, who co-owns El Valle in Midtown and Oaxaca in Chamblee, and his partners Jay, Harry and Neil Patel.

El Valle brings sophisticated Mexican cuisine to Midtown
When it comes to authentic Mexican food, Midtown’s El Valle likely is closer to the real deal than your neighborhood lunch combo spot. The sleek, stylish restaurant would be right at home in Mexico City, one of the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan metropolises in North America.

Conversations with Maria Dominguez
My career in interior design originated from exposure to architecture at an early age. Working alongside her architect mother, I discovered elegant design; she also learned balance, proportion, pattern, and texture. I grew a passion for the field organically. After moving from Colombia to the United States, I pursued my dream of being a high-end interior designer. By earning a Bachelor of Arts from The Art Institute of Atlanta, I went on to work for some of Atlanta’s most renowned designers and expressed my creativity through high-profile projects. After some time, I decided to share my designs and personal style with the world directly.
